Exercise is good for human and canine alike. Here are some fun ways to exercise with a dog - and still burn lots of calories.

Dogs need exercise as much as humans and exercising with a dog is a fun way to escape the gym scene and enjoy some quality canine bonding time. Dogs are the ultimate motivator when it comes to getting fit. They’re always enthusiastic, and their tail-wagging, “get-up-and-go” attitude helps to lift even the most reluctant human off the couch and out the door to burn some calories. Exercise is also a good panacea for dog boredom. Need some ideas for canine friendly, calorie blasting activities? Here are some fun ways to exercise with a dog.

The Simplest Way to Exercise with a Dog: No Equipment Required

What dog doesn’t enjoy a walk? All that enthusiasm is contagious too. Time goes by quickly when walking with a canine companion. The key is to find new places to explore such as a dog-friendly park, a nearby neighborhood, or a walking trail. Why not start a dog walking club that meets on Saturdays where canines and dog lovers alike can exercise in unison? It sure beats walking on a treadmill.

Running or jogging is another option, but a dog needs to be in good shape to work that hard. Be aware of the signs of canine overexertion such as excessive panting or lagging behind. Bring along water too – especially if it’s a hot day. Check with a veterinarian beforehand to make sure Fido’s in shape.

Find Peace in the Woods

Hiking is a way to get back to nature and enjoy time unwinding with a canine pal – while burning away excess rolls of fat. Check the Internet for the best local dog hikes. Start early and bring along lots of water and a lunch to share. Hiking burns calories – especially on a hilly trail. It’s a great way for both human and dog to stay in shape.

Participate in a Dog Walk

Looking for a good cause to support? Sign up for the next SPCA dog walk and burn some calories while raising money. Other humane organizations sponsor also sponsor these events throughout the year to raise money for homeless dogs. This is a fun way to exercise since they usually have canine contests, food, and other forms of entertainment. It’s a guaranteed good time.

Play Ball or Frisbee

This is usually more exercise for the dog than for the human, but the calorie burn can be multiplied by running back and forth between throws and doing jumping jacks while waiting for the ball to be returned. Fido is guaranteed a fabulous workout.

A Word of Caution When Exercising with a Dog

Dogs should never exercise right after they’ve eaten and should be examined by a veterinarian beforehand. Don’t take them out when it’s too hot outside and always have plenty of water available. Some dogs become overheated very quickly – particularly breeds with short snouts such as Bulldogs. Safety should be the first concern.

Exercising with a dog can be a rewarding experience. Why not take Fido along?
